


Example: Theatre For Social Change
This course explores the transformative power of theatre as a tool for social justice, community engagement, and political activism. Students will examine historical and contemporary models of socially engaged performance, including Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, documentary theatre, response pieces and performance movements. Sessions focus on a process of on-your-feet devising via exercises and performance with additional reading, reflection, and discussion. Students will learn how to create original performances that address urgent social issues and amplify marginalized voices. The course emphasizes collaboration, critical thinking, and ethical engagement with communities. Students will culminate their experience by developing and presenting a short socially conscious performance piece aimed at inspiring dialogue and change. No previous performance experience required.
